What is Photorejuvination with Sciton BBL?

Photorejuvination also known as Fotofacial Rejuvenation uses Broadband Light (BBL) technology to change how your skin cells express genes. Young skin cells actively read genes which instruct the cells to produce more collagen, pigment, and do other healthy cell activities. But as the cells reproduce and age, they begin to actively read genes which instruct the cells to stop doing young-cell activities , which causes wrinkling and age spots. According to Dr. Patrick Bitter who has published studies on this treatment, the light causes the reactivation of young-cell genes, reversing the aging process. (See his video here)

How does it work?

BBL, BroadBand Light, utilizes the principal of Selective Photothermolysis and select filters to target brown spots, pigmentation, broken capillaries, rosacea, and uneven skin texture. This procedure also builds collagen under the skin for a more healthy and youthful look. BBL uses unfocused laser light in short, quick bursts to destroy some old skin cells (which read the aging genes) so that new, younger skin cells can grow in their place. The new skin cells do young skin work by producing collagen (to bring back elasticity), clearing up age and sun spots, and maintaining hydration

Does it hurt?

It is non-invasive and very gentle. You won’t feel the old skin cells being destroyed and the light pulses should be quick enough that heat doesn’t have time to collect in your skin. Some people notice a quick heating sensation as the laser gets started, though they are able to tolerate it very well.

What about after the treatment?

You may experience some redness that will likely resolve in a couple of hours. Pigmented lesions will darken and flake off over a week or so. Sun spots and wrinkles will fade over time. Talk to your laser specialist about your specific skin needs.

Is there downtime?

No, this is an in-office procedure and very non-invasive. You should be able to resume normal activities the same day. However, we strongly recommend using sunscreen regularly for the next several weeks after treatment as the sun can damage the new, growing cells.

How long will the treatments take?

Generally, for best results, we recommend 3-5 treatments a month apart depending on skin type. We will do an extensive skin analysis at the time of your appointment.

What can it do for me?

The Photorejuvenation procedure is designed to slow down the aging process. Studies show that after the treatment, the equivalent of one year of aging was see over the course of 8 years. However, the treatments also reverse some signs of aging including skin laxity, sun spots, wrinkles, acne, rosacea, and facial veins.
